News from 3A

Year 3A has had yet another busy term filled with lots of exciting incursions and excursions that helped our students grow. Students travelled through time on their City Walk and learnt about Indigenous Australia. They visited the Melbourne Aquarium to learn about Allah’s creations; learnt how to cook and all about healthy food options during their Travelling Kitchen incursion; and they also learnt how to respond in emergency situations from the St John’s Ambulance First Aid Training.

Students have been working extremely hard in all areas of the curriculum. In Literacy, students learnt how to persuade others to agree with their point of view. They also looked at fact and opinion and learnt how to identify the difference between them. In Maths, students learnt about Australian money and how to calculate change. In Integrated Studies, we focused on Australian geography. The Year 3s also took part in a maths quiz created by our very own Year 6s. The Year 3s were asked to test the Year 6 creations to see if they were engaging and fun to complete.

News from 3B

It has been another busy term with excursions, incursions and NAPLAN. Students have taken part in various school activities. They have learnt the basic skills of First Aid provided by St John’s Ambulance and they have recently started soccer clinics provided by Melbourne Victory.

For literacy we have been focusing on persuasive writing where students have been looking at how to structure their written pieces and practising how to giving their opinions about certain issues. Their skills have been honed during class with classroom debates.

For numeracy students have been looking at addition, subtraction, money for number, and algebra. Our class has been looking at different ways to add and subtract and looking at the value of the different coins and notes. Student have also been applying their addition and subtraction skills to add values and count change.

For Integrated Studies students focused on Geography. We have learnt about Australia’s history, by going on an excursion to Melbourne Museum, including a city walk. We have been looking at Australia’s geographical features both natural and manmade. For Health, we have been looking at healthy eating and food hygiene with ‘The Travelling Kitchen’ coming into our classrooms and teaching us about a variety of healthy foods, their nutritional benefits and how we need to be more safe and hygienic in the kitchen, so that we do not injure ourselves or make others sick.

Years 3 and 4 Art

The Years 3 & 4 students have been very busy in art class. They are creative and innovative when planning and creating different art projects. They are all enthusiastic about art and enjoy the class dearly. Students have manipulated paper to create poppies for ANZAC Day. They have designed their own patterns and carved them into foam to create a printing template. They have then used that template to print onto paper and create beautiful pieces of art.

Here’s a testimonial from our lovely Year 3B student, Shazfa:

“I love art. I think it is beautiful. I find it in a calm and relaxing way. It always gets messy in art, but doesn’t it feel good to be messy? I think art is amazing because there is always other experiences waiting to be experienced. It is like another place you can set your mind into and I think that place is the best place you can relax in, even if somebody has drawn something in scribbles just to see it in a different way. It might mean something special and everything is somewhat special in every way.”

Upper Primary Coordinator’s Message

Term 2 was surely a very busy term and we look forward to sharing our plans and special learning activities through this newsletter.

Homework:

As a team we believe that homework is an important part of the learning process for our children. In Term 1 we had some concerns in regards to homework. Some students had difficulties completing online Mathletics tasks and Reading Eggs tasks. Students were mentioning that they do not have Internet access at home. If that is the case, students can complete their homework at a local library or make alternative arrangements. This is a hurdle task as we expect students to do their best job with their homework. We also expect students to do the work on their own and only ask for help after they have given it their best effort. We strongly encourage parents to get involved in supporting their child’s homework activities. Please check and sign the homework booklet outline each night. If students do not bring their homework on the due date we expect a note from parents.

If you have any questions or concerns, please make an appointment at the front office, or you may call the school and leave a message for me.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Kind regards,
Mrs Esra Yildirim-Bas
